In the case scenario, Jason is a college student accused of making and selling methamphetamine. If charged and convicted, his educational and career goals will be terminated. Social psychology can help explain Jason’s behavior because it refers to the scientific study of situational and personal factors that influence an individual’s social behavior. Even as the community decries its implications, drug abuse or dealings often flow from a shared social understanding. In this context, Jason chose to engage in criminality despite its risks because of cultural attributes for retaliation and threat. For example, the social psychologist would understand that Jason learned to make and distribute methamphetamine from his social environment, and his risk-taking behavior could be attributed to the need to be accepted in the group. In order to sustain group membership, Jason has to conform to their norms and expectations despite the severity of the consequences once charged and convicted. Failure to engage in drug dealings would also trigger punishment, incapacitation, or rejection (Fiske, 2018). Given that Jason is still a student, the social psychologist would conclude that his behavior is simply about following social norms regarding risk-taking behaviors and criminality.
