Borderline Personality Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings alternating between emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and emotional lows (depression). The three major types of bipolar disorder are: bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymia.
Bipolar I defined by the occurrence of no less than one neurotic experience that is often heralded or succeeded by hypomanic or affective disorders. Bipolar II is characterized by no less than one psychological occurrence and an affective disorder. Cyclothymic disorder is defined by the occurrence of many periods of hypomania and depressive symptoms for at least two years (Mayo Clinic, 2021).
DSM-5 Coding and Description
The DSM-5 designates different diagnostic codes to the three bipolar disorders. For bipolar I disorder, prevailing or most current neurotic occurrence, mild, is designated as 296.41 (F31.11), moderate 296.42 (F31.12) and critical 296.43 (F31.13), with psychotic features 296.44 (F31.2), in partial remission 296.45 (F31.74), in full remission 296.46 (F31.74) and unspecified 296.40 (F31.9), and prevailing or latest depressive episode 296.51 (F31.31), 296.52 (F31.32), 296.53 (F31.4), 296.54 (F31.5), 296.55 (F31.75), 296.56 (F31.76), and 296.50 (F31.4), respectively. Bipolar disorder II has the 296.89 (F31.81) code while cyclothymic disorder is diagnosed as 301.13 (F34.0) (Lojko, Suwalska, & Rybakowski, 2014). The psychological model that best fits this disorder is the cognitive model.
Causes of Bipolar Disorder
The exact cause of bipolar disorder is yet to be discovered although a combination of genetics, biological, and environmental factors have been shown to play a role. Bipolar disorder has been linked to chemical imbalances in the brain, genetics, and environmental triggers like the death of a loved one, abuse (physical, emotional or sexual), or even sleep disturbances.
Although symptoms may vary from one individual to another, a manic or a hypomanic episode includes three or more of these symptoms: increased agitation and energy, euphoria, insomnia, talkativeness, distractibility, and poor decision making.
