Visionary Leaders
Visionary leaders know what and how they want their organizations to be in the future and align every organization member with that vision. According to Mason (2019), visionary leaders create the vision and inspire their teams to adopt the vision and commit to achieving it. This paper explores two visionary leaders, namely Elon Musk and Salman Khan, and how their leadership influences the current tribal stage of their organizations.
Impact on Organizational Tribal Stage
Elon Musk is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and has inspired and motivated his team by leading them by example. According to Umoh (2017), Musk believes that leaders are there to serve their employees and lead by example, and this has inspired his teams. Musk is a visionary leader who has managed to inspire his teams to work tirelessly for long hours to achieve the vision. By leading by example, leaders inspire the followers to feel ownership of the vision (Mason, 2019). Musk has managed to do this, and his organization is at the “I am great” tribal stage characterized by a focus on winning and achieving results at an individual level (Shufutinsky, 2019).
Salman Khan is the founder and CEO of Khan Academy, an organization that provides free instructional videos for students to enhance access to education (Khan Academy, n.d.). According to Mason (2019), visionary leaders need to create a vision that adds value to the world around them. This is the approach that Khan has used because he started creating math and science video tutorials for his cousins, and now he provides free tutorials for children around the world. Through his vision, he has persuaded his employees and other people who have partnered with him to make his vision a reality. His organization is also at the “we are great” tribal stage characterized by collaboration and shared values (Shufutinsky, 2019) with a world-class team and great partnerships with the likes of Bill Gates.
