Overview: Clear and concise writing is the hallmark of a good writer. According to Rocco and Hatcher (2011), the three most common mistakes a novice author makes are “verbosity, ambiguity, and unsubstantiality” (p. 101). This week you will be performing a peer review of the week 3 article which will illustrate this point.

The peer-review process prior to publication in an academic journal is the method that requires an article submitted for publication to be reviewed and critiqued by “peers” and other qualified scholars in the field. These scholars are not only knowledgeable in their field but also understand the requirements of academic writing. If the article being reviewed falls short on either content or style it will be rejected or returned for revision. Reviewing others’ work is an excellent way to see a paper from a different perspective and will allow you to better see your own work from the perspective of a reviewer. This week you will use the “Peer Review Checklist” found in “Week 3 Readings” folder in “Start Here” to evaluate the paper: “Theory of Human Motivation” . Answer Questions 1-5 of the checklist.

1. Thesis.
Copy and paste the thesis of the paper below. If you can’t find it briefly describe what you think it might be.
Does it clearly state the writer’s purpose for the paper?
Does it set the stage for the remainder of the paper?
How could it be improved in terms of stating the writer’s position or point-of-view?
Where is the thesis statement in the paper ... at the beginning? at the end? Is this positioning effective in terms of preparing the reader for what is to follow?
2. Introduction:
Does the introduction provide some general background regarding the topic of the paper?
Does the introduction make you want to keep reading? Why or why not?
By the end of the introduction do you know the purpose of the paper and how the author intends to address that purpose?
3. Introduction: Follow-through.
Having read the rest of the paper, did you find that the introduction gave you a good idea of what the author actually did address in the rest of the paper?
If not, what is the main point of the paper? Is there a main point?
4. Introduction & Conclusion.
Think about the relationship between the introduction and conclusion. Does the conclusion logically connect to the introduction and thesis statement? How?
Is it a successful conclusion in that it offers closure to the paper while emphasizing the main thesis strongly one last time?
5. Strategies of Development.
Is the paper logically organized into separate sections with headings that represent the major and minor points of the argument?
Are the sections of the paper organized into a logical sequence which supports the thesis statement?
What strategies of development do you see the author using on the paragraph level or in the paper as a whole? Which are the most successful?

Introduction

Theory of Human Motivation
This theory was first presented by author Maslow in 1943 and is taken as the background for comprehending human motivation. Even in the current world it goes on being utilized as a background for other behavior and motivation theories. The theory asserts that each person has basic needs that must be satisfied including actualization, esteem, love and belonging, safety, psychological and biological. Following the fulfillment of these needs like feeling loved or having shelter, one has the capability of concentrating on high-order needs like self-actualization and self-esteem.

I actually like the manner Maslow introduced the theory. It was very distinct way of introducing his topic as it takes the audience to the mind of a person interested to this topic. At the beginning of the theory, the author talks on how people always associate to their needs. The theory’s purpose was to pass the message that human needs motivate one’s continued living. The author fulfilled this purpose by tying how people always utilize their needs as an ordinary thing to pursue life. I think these associates to all readers. In the introduction, the author gives a good idea of what the he was writing about.
Maslow matched the guidelines focusing on how the actualization, esteem, love and belonging, safety, psychological and biological associates to fulfillment and the information add up to pass the point about fulfillment. He presents his main point clearly and does not lose direction.
