1 The period after the arrival of the Europeans, led by Christopher Columbus, in the Americas is often referred to as the beginning of civilization. In 1625 a colonist judge in Samayac, Guatemala, initiated an ethnocide by banning the performance of the traditional Indian dances. The Spanish were responsible for the Incas genocide that reduced their population to a mere 600, 000 from 6 million in the early 1600s.
2 The difficulties endured by Canada’s First Nations people include cultural suppression or ethnocide, mass killing or genocides, land grabbing, and death from diseases such as smallpox and measles. The white settlers or invaders saw the native Canadians as savages whose cultural orientation was primitive and in need of forceful education to convert them into the White way of thinking.
