Artifact
What is your chosen artifact? Include a link to or a picture of the artifact.
The chosen artifact is an ancient African comb.
/

* Describe the artifact in detail. For instance, how would you describe it to someone who could not see it?
The artifact is an ancient African comb. It has been used as a tool used to make different hairstyles for African men and women. The comb is brown in color and semi-circle shaped. The handle has unique markings that could be used to artistically highlight the owner’s social status. For instance, the early combs contained an image at the bottom that looks like a human face with eyes, with a floating headdress. It could act as a hint regarding the purpose of the item.

* Choose elements of the artifact that you believe are most important to how you experience it and explain why. For instance, what particularly catches your senses or makes you want to keep experiencing it? Does the choice of medium impact your experience?
The elements that are most important to how I experience the handles of the afro combs. The function is always the same, which means it is used for making different hairstyles. However, the comb’s handle has changed over the years and is unique in nature (Crawshay-Hall, 2020). The handles tend to have a political and cultural meaning, which has changed over the years. An example of the “black fist,” which is used to symbolize black power and was made famous by the Blank Panthers, a political movement in the US that arose in the 1960s (Coote, 2017). The bottom of the comb has often been influenced by culture and has been used to depict spiritual work, such as using pictures, motifs, human figures, and other elements.

Assumptions about your artifact
* State your opinion on what you believe is the purpose of this artifact and the success of the creator in achieving the purpose. For instance, what message do you believe the creator is trying to express and is that message successfully expressed?
From my analysis, I believe the purpose of the afro comb is not to be used just as a tool to style their hair, but also as a symbol of collective identity and a political emblem. Black politicians and leaders have often used the artifact to say no to oppression, which has been very effective. It is an example of the Black Panther movement who popularized the comb by introducing the black power fist at the bottom of the comb. The comb has acted as a means of achieving comradeship for individuals who wear their hair, which grows out and up, rather than down.

* Discuss how the artifact reflects the culture (or context) in which it exists. Be sure to address what aspects of culture have relevance for this artifact: politics, history, religion, social perceptions, technology, media, education, and so on. In other words, how do the artifact and its culture interrelate? For instance, how would a particular form of body modification reflect the urban culture in which you encountered it?
The artifact has been used as a reflection of the c...
