Various researchers have studied unintentional injuries on college campuses. Their studies have revealed that the injuries originate from multiple causes, including drinking and driving, lack of personal control, and even posttraumatic stress and not some aspects such as sororities. This paper reviews studies that have researched topics relating to unintentional injuries on college campuses, such as causes and suggested intervention methods to minimize the injuries.
Peltzer & Pengpid (2015) conducted a study to evaluate the risk factors related to unintentional injuries among college students in various countries, including developed, developing, and undeveloped nations. The results show that development is not a significant factor, and most unintentional injuries result from other issues, including; lack of personal control, lack of social support, and posttraumatic stress.
Webster et al. 2016 examined the implications of policies that allow the carrying of firearms into college and university campuses. According to their research, the systems’ aim entailed ensuring safety by reducing the risks of a mass shooting. However, their study results reveal that idea led to injuries among the students in the case of sudden firing where they are not alarmed before the shooting.
The study by Peterson et al. (2018) tested the association between fraternities and sororities and a high rate of local injuries among undergraduate youth. According to their findings, the campuses serving fraternities and sororities experienced lower rates of injuries from all causes apart from firearms injuries. The results show that fraternities sororities are not associated with higher injury rates among the students, like firearms.
Schaffer et al. (2019) examined the impact of unintentional falls from heights such as balconies on college students. Their study shows that such accidents lead to life-threatening traumatic injuries on the affected students.
Meske et al. (2019) researched the prevalence of traumatic brain injury and campus service utilization among undergraduate students. The study results show that the current prevalence of traumatic brain injury among college students is 51.7% higher than prior reports on the adult college population. The research proves that the current prevalence of college injuries is higher than in the past.
The study conducted by Lindergren & Carlton Sanborn (n.d.) shows that vast populations of college students harm themselves to the extend of committing suicide due to drug abuse. They identified that apart from alcohol, significant numbers of college students use other substances such as marijuana that eventually lead to problems related to thoughts that may result in extreme actions like suicide.
Koeckritz (2018) embarked on a study on the impact of drinking and driving among college students.
