Challenges in negotiating conflicts
Negotiation does not always resolve issues and lack of communication is one of the challenges in the negotiation process. Both parties ought to listen, but if this is absent the negotiations are slow and open communication is necessary to foster mutual trust (Hollier et al., 2008). Sometimes there is no agreement on what each party in a conflict ought to do, the expected outcomes, while the goals of the negotiation ought to be clear to avoid stalling negotiation and even escalating conflicts. Additionally, power imbalance can affect the way the parties negotiate since each party wants support, but the one with more power has more leverage and this may not result in a win/win situation. The parties must also be willing to resolve the conflict through negotiation, but may not necessarily agree on the way forward and the best way to do this.
Conflict between nurse and pediatrician
A nurse is in charge of the staff nurse at a pediatric unit, and a seven year old diabetic patient and made judgment that his situation required immediate attention and called the new resident who was younger than the nurse, and the nurse made some suggestions, and the resident assured he would into the matter. As the nurse believed that the child faced a life threatening situation she later called the pediatrician at the emergency hospital, but when he learned the resident was previously there he failed to show up. However, the nurse could not write orders and believed that the child required further observations.
