Question for Discussion:
The role of the school nurse includes care of students who have medically complex health conditions. Mattson and Kuo (2019) define this student population as children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN). Care coordination by the school nurse should ensure that CYSHCN receive the same care at home. Furthermore, it is essential that CYSHCN receive equitable education. Mattson and Kuo (2019) argued that increased stress, poor socialization and poor school performance can be a direct result of schools inability to accommodate CYSHCN. Kuo and Houtrow (2016) posited that overarching goals for optimal health for children with medical complexity (CMC) is to maximize health, function development and family function through patient and family centered care (PFCC), and providing proactive, as opposed to reactive care to prevent critical medical and health events. Selekman and Ness (2019) discuss how this student population can experience significant challenges including the need for accommodations in the school setting, psychosocial issues and the implications for practice of the school nurse.
Review the priorities of the school nurse in coordinating the care for CYSHCN. How can the school nurse advocate for this student population? In what ways can the school nurse provide a holistic school experience? Consider the challenges as discussed by Selekman and Ness (2019) and review the care map created by the mother of a child with medical complexity to pictorially represent the aspects of her child’s life. How can you, as a school nurse, intervene to ease some of the tensions experienced in the school setting? Discuss best practices for family, health care provider, school staff and child study team member involvement in the plan of care? Include any relative New Jersey administrative codes and state/city/township services that are in place to provide additional support to the child and family to ensure success in the classroom. Use the literature provided in Module II and Promoting Health and Learning: School Nursing Practice in New Jersey’s Public Schools (2018) and the June 2020 Supplement, which can be located at https://www(dot)njssna(dot)org/njssna/resources/practice-guide to support your answer. Also include current practice, if applicable, with appropriate protection of student rights according to HIPAA and FERPA.

Students with Medically Complex Health Conditions
The school nurse is instrumental in promoting positive health and academic outcomes among children and youth. When coordinating the care for CYSHCN, school nurses' priorities lie in providing direct care and helping children manage their health conditions for improved health and academic outcomes (Best et al., 2017). The school nurse must advocate for this student population to ensure they receive student-centered care. School nurses can advocate for these students by providing health education to them and their families and suggesting to them relevant resources to support their health and academic achievement (National Association of School Nurses, 2017).
Students with medically complex health conditions must deal with bullying, being labeled, or being considered different, which can increase tension and impede their health and academic progress (Selekman & Ness, 2019). As a school nurse, I am responsible for easing this tension and creating a positive environment for the students. I can achieve this by educating the students and school staff about various medically complex conditions. According to Selekman and Ness (2019), such education can reduce the stigma around this student population. I can also offer student counseling to improve students' confidence and self-worth.
