Patients should undergo pre-operative education to prepare them for surgery and what to expect after the operating practices. It is normal for a patient to become anxious or stressed before a surgical operation (Bartik & Toruner, 2018). The majority of patients end up asking endless questions regarding the experience at the operation theaters and many more. Nurses and medical professionals are obligated to educate such patients on pain management tips, how to take care of them (Cavallaro et al., 2018). Several literary sources cover the topic of preoperational education, even though they vary in arguments regarding the importance of this approach. It is worth conducting a literary review to understand the level to which the chosen studies relate to the picot for this capstone project. This is a literature review conducted to determine how pre-operative patient education reduces post-operative care complications and anxiety.
Comparison of Research Questions.
The literature chosen covers pre-operation intervention and its importance in reducing feelings such as anxiety. Bartik and Toruner (2018) conducted a research study exploring the effect of preoperative education on the stress levels and of both parents and children. The setting of this study was at a pediatric surgery clinic. Baysal (2018) conducted a research study to determine the effect of preoperational education on the knowledge level of patients who were recommended for warfarin therapy. The study showed that patients who underwent pre-operation education acquired more knowledge on the recommended therapy and how to control any side effects that come along with such experiences. Cavallaro et al. (2018), on the other hand, conducted a research study determining the importance of pre-operation education in the ERA pathway. The scholars mentioned that there was limited information on how pre-operation education and ERA pathway linked, so they determined a gap in the literature that needed to be filled. Ead et al. (2017) conducted a research study focusing on the importance of pre-operation education in reducing anxiety and enhancing confidence among patients. The research conducted by Ead et al. (2017) determined that patients who passed through pre-operation education were more confident and had recorded no anxiety.
Herbet et al. (2017) studied the views of nurses and healthcare professionals regarding ERAS, a crucial pre-operative education approach. The research reported that healthcare professionals who have a positive attitude towards such preoperative practices are more likely to initiate improved outcomes and speedy patient recovery after the operation. Liebner (2015) on the other hand. investigated how improved pre-operative literature helped in reducing post-surgery complications. The researcher mentioned all kinds of pre-operation education should have done in a more understandable manner taking into account the literary levels of the patients.
