Mental/behavioral health services are minimal or nonexistent in most US schools. Yet the incidence of mental health conditions among children and adolescents has grown exponentially in the last decade. School nurses must be prepared to manage students with a variety of mental health concerns including Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Mood Disorders, Major Depressive Disorder, suicide ideation, and eating disorders. School nurses are often the first to interact with students in emotional turmoil due to grief, crisis, or despair. Knowledge of these conditions is necessary in the successful management of students in the health office. School nurses must also be prepared with the tools to identify, mediate and appropriately refer students with these conditions.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5):
(1) Examine health-related barriers to learning for diverse student populations comprised of intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and medically fragile and complex needs.
(2) Analyze federal and state legislation related to child protection, adolescent rights to privacy, and the health and nursing care of special populations of students in school.
(3) Analyze evidence-based screening tools and interventional strategies in the early recognition and treatment of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral problems in children and adolescents.
(4) Integrate the principles of health promotion, population health, care coordination, interprofessional collaboration, and cultural competency in reducing health-related barriers to learning.
(5) Examine the potential causes of, and the health, cultural, social, and behavioral effects of risk behaviors, violence, trauma, abuse, and neglect on children and adolescents.

Health-related barriers to learning include behavioral issues and mental disorders, which contribute significantly to school suspension, absenteeism, and dropouts. These issues hinder students from participating in learning, and as such, they should be of primary concern to school nurses. Whether the student's problem behaviors are internalizing or externalizing, school nurses must be skilled and prepared to identify and adequately respond to them. Therefore, school nurses must be empowered to help students with behavior problems through adequate training on mental health.
