Scholarly Activity for Perinatal Depression
Overview
Last summer, I participated in the National Perinatal Mental Health Conference (NPMHC) in New York. The event was attended by many healthcare providers, including physicians, doctors, nurses, healthcare administrators, therapists, and gynecologists from different parts of the world, the majority being from the United States of America (USA). The primary discussion during the NPMHC was to amplify female experiences during and after pregnancy by considering their mental health. The target market for this conference was healthcare professionals who handle expectant women so that they could help in identifying and addressing this health issue. Notably, the NPMHC was beneficial to me since I understood that perinatal depression is a significant problem that should be taken seriously. In particular, perinatal depression can start from conception and continue even after birth (Kerr, 2023). Mothers need to be provided with appropriate assistance throughout their pregnancies and after they give birth.
Problem
The NPMHC was introduced to address the issue of perinatal depression among expectant mothers. In particular, maternal perinatal mental health significantly affects the well-being of the baby, the mother, and her family. In the general population, the prevalence of perinatal depression is between 10% and 15%. Some of the things that contribute to this mental issue are abnormalities in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and hormonal dysregulation (Dickens & Pawluski, 2018). Perinatal depression is a mental health problem that affects expectant mothers during and after pregnancy, which cannot be ignored. Nurses and other healthcare providers can acquire numerous lessons on how to prevent and address the issue of perinatal depression by attending this scholarly activity. The most significant thing is by knowing that perinatal depression is a significant problem and can be solved.
Solution
The following are solutions that were discussed during the NPMHC:
Pregnant mothers should be helped to access quality healthcare services to avoid complications that might increase...
