Mammography is one of the most utilized methods of examining the human breast for any abnormal signs and symptoms, which could indicate a variety of breast diseases. It was created back in the 1950s by Dr. Robert Egan to use x-rays to improve the accuracy of non-invasive preventive measures during those times (Shampo & Kyle, 1997). Due to these efforts, current estimates show that mammography has become very effective in the identification of early symptoms of breast cancer, with an accuracy rate of 87% all over the world. However, this innovation is not without its drawbacks. Due to the use of ionizing radiation several studies have shown that misuse of such technique could endanger women, especially the in the ages of 40 and below (Madadi, Zhang, & Henderson, 2015). These risks include the possibility of developing cancer due to radiation as well as inaccuracy of the results. Despite this, mammography has indeed become one of the greatest tools for the prevention of breasts diseases and the reduction of mortality rate associated with such disease given that the policies implemented for its right use are followed. In the following section, some of these policies would be discussed in further detail.
As stated earlier, the inherent risks associated with mammography has become the reason for the development of stringent policies on its usage. One of the most accepted and followed guidelines in its use is the policy forwarded by the American Cancer Society (ACS). Regarding usage, the ACS suggests that women should undergo mammograms every once a year, starting at the age of 45. This annual screening is highly-recommended since women of those ages are at risk of developing breast cancer. In contrast, women who are aged 55 and above are only advised to undergo mammography every two years.
