Pediatric and Perinatal Mental Health
Discuss at least two beliefs or other factors related to pediatric or perinatal mental healthcare that create barriers to mental health treatment.
Perinatal mental healthcare is fundamental due to the diverse and complex aspects that could interfere with desirable health outcomes for the mother and the unborn child. However, Webb et al. (2021) indicate that several barriers falling into different system levels may interfere with such treatment. For instance, the author highlights stigma as the leading societal factor that interferes with perinatal mental health access throughout the care pathway because it makes it challenging for individuals to decide to seek treatments and follow up for referrals. Webb et al. (2021) also underline the lack of family support regarding mental health as an individual-level factor. Such an aspect leads to individuals downplaying the importance of the treatment leading to ignorance or overlooking its need. The researchers also indicate that poor communication by healthcare experts significantly hampers the treatment process and increases patients’ reluctance to seek appropriate care. As a result, creating awareness is critical for assisting individuals to overcome these factors.
Identify at least two specific education strategies or resources the PMHNP can provide to clients and families to address these barriers.
The psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNP) are responsible for finding suitable solutions for the diverse perinatal mental healthcare factors that lead to treatment barriers. These professionals can eradicate the challenges by embracing specific educational tactics that lead to the empowerment of the target population (Preston et al., 2021). For instance, they can eliminate the stigma through local consensus dialogues with pregnant women and other stakeholders to dispel the misconceptions about perinatal mental health (Webb et al., 2021). This strategy would create awareness that mental health is commonplace and requires professional treatment. Understanding that it is not shameful would encourage these women to seek healthcare services. Conducting community-level seminars would also increase the literacy of families and underscore the value of supportive systems at this level for pregnant women seeking mental healthcare (Webb et al., 2021). Finally, the capacity building of the healthcare experts to create a non-judgmental attitude and capability to remain sensitive to their patients, including discerning their verbal and non-verbal cues, would improve communication (Webb et al., 2021). These education approaches significantly potentially transfor...
