In healthcare, nurses form the backbone of institutional operations, and this unique position places them as frequent users of health information technology systems. Being the core users, they remain relevant in any technological development in medical facilities (Pepito & Locsin, 2019). Thus, failing to involve them in each phase of the systems development life cycle results in several consequences. First, implementing the system takes longer, considering that buy-in efforts are undermined. Secondly, cooperation in the change process is likely to be undermined. The third consequence is that nurses would be put under unnecessary pressure to adopt a system they do not have a personal connection with, leading to burnout and decreased productivity.
When nurses have autonomy and responsibility in developing technological systems, it facilitates its success, considering that their input in successive phases provides feedback critical to fixing systemic issues (Kutney-Lee et al., 2019).
