In nursing school, nurses are prepared to become competent in their practice in future as licensed professionals. I believe that mentors are key in shaping the skills and build confidence, especially for newly graduated nurses. With this important factor in mind, I selected the importance of mentors and useful characteristics that are needed during recruitment and training of nurses and nurse faculty. In my career path as a student nurse, I had the chance to work with some of the amazing, knowledgeable and caring nurse mentors. Because of their good guidance and strong leadership skills, I have grown to be a more competent nurse; this is the most valuable encounter that I believe shaped my career as a nurse.
One of the articles written in the nursing journal, the article discusses some of the important characteristics of a mentor from the nursing perspective. The article titled. What nursing students reveal about and learn from mentors when using stories of clinical practice by Edwards, (2017), presents nursing students’ stories of clinical practice experiences. The article advocates for the importance of using stories as a tool to help mentors become competent in their roles. According to the article, mentors need to be sensitive by understanding nursing student concerns and their priorities (Edwards, 2017). The article emphasizes on paying attention to nursing student concerns as a mentor that can help improve students’ learning outcomes (Edwards, 2017). It is true that having a good mentor can motivate you to become better in your career path.
