While the etiology of the nephrotic syndrome remains unclear, the disease is caused by defects in the glomerular filtration barrier. The condition affects both children and adults. In children, the prevalence varies significantly along racial and geographical lines. In children, for instance, it is highly prevalent in people of South Asian descent (Varner, Matory, & Gbadegesin, 2018). Further, resistance to medication is high among African Americans and Latinos compared to people of European descent. Overall, the disease has a prevalence of 16 in every 100,000 children (Varner, Matory, & Gbadegesin, 2018). Despite this alarming rate of prevalence, the disease is preventable, treatable, and manageable.
