I was fascinated to read McConnell et al.’s “We Have a Rubric for That: The VALUE Approach to Assessment.” The Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education (VALUE) was established in 2009 to assess the quality of students learning across and within institutions. The authors say, “Valid assessment data are needed to guide planning, teaching, and improvement” (McConnell, Horan, Zimmerman, & Rhodes, 2019, p. 1). This statement raises a crucial question of whether the activities included in a specific course are the best authentic representation of the learning process.
Specifically, I like how the authors perceive college education as playing an essential role to prepare learners to become responsible citizens. The VALUE was created to emphasize equity and quality to enhance undergraduate education excellence (McConnell, Horan, Zimmerman, & Rhodes, 2019, p. 7).
