An Initiative Measure to Address Teachers Shortages in Arizona through Teacher Tax Credit
Arizona offers unique opportunities for direct democracy based on initiative power. In 2012 the Arizona voters, for example, rejected the Proposition 204 initiative that sought to convert a temporary sales tax that funded education into a permanent tax.
In a 500-750-word “Letter to the Editor,” propose an initiative for an educational issue that you feel needs to be addressed. Include a plan about how this issue could become an initiative under Arizona law.
** Specific instructions from the professor: the Letter to the Editor assignment must include an explanation of the specific steps that you are required to take to obtain an initiative in Arizona. A significant amount of points can be lost for failing to include this description.
Your letter should be written to persuade others to agree with your position. Support your position with examples from case law, the U.S. Constitution, or other readings.
While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

I am writing this letter to propose an initiative that will ensure that teachers are supported and motivated to remain in the profession. Specifically, I propose a teacher tax credit to incentivize more teachers and keep them in the profession. It will also encourage future teachers to join the profession. Currently, teachers are underpaid, overworked and sometimes, they use their own money to provide supplies to their students (Senate.gov, 2019). Adding this to the pressures brought by the pandemic, many teachers are not staying in schools. I believe that this initiative, which will allow teachers a tax credit of up to $500, will ensure they are well compensated for the work they do, including spending their own money to provide our children with school supplies.

Subject: An Initiative Measure to Address Teachers Shortages in Arizona through Teacher Tax Credit
Dear Sir/Madam,
The continued and persistent lack of adequate teachers in our schools has become quite a challenge that continues to affect the quality of education provided to our children. In a recent article published by your newspaper, you revealed that Arizona faces a shortage of teachers, including substitute teachers, which has placed a heavy workload on teachers currently working in schools (Kunichoff, 2022). There is poor teacher retention due to poor pay, as well as the current challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Teachers require support to ensure they are also in a position to support our children and improve the quality of education in Arizona.
To address this issue, I propose a teacher tax credit which will work as an incentive to keep more teachers in the profession. It will also encourage future teachers to join the profession. The proposal will allow teachers a tax credit of up to $500 to ensure they are well compensated for the work they do, including spending their own money to provide our children with school supplies. Such a proposal has been made at the federal level as well as in other states, such as California. Specifically, Senator Cory Booker introduced the Respect, Advancement, and Increasing Support for Educators (RAISE) Act to ensure that teachers are well compensated for the work they do (Senate.gov, 2019). The act would also ensure that teachers in high-poverty public schools are not using money from their own pockets to provide needy students with supplies. California also introduced a bill for a tax credit o...
