Recess is a regularly occurring time during the school day that provides the child with the chance to participate in free-choice play which is highly valuable. Children exposed to various forms of play are better equipped in navigating social situations when they become adults (Wood & Freeman-Loftis, 2011). Physical education along with recess in schools are important components of the curriculum that enable a student to develop high physical competence, self-accountability and also understand the value of physical activities which ensures that such students remain physically active in the future.
Numerous schools across the U.S have limited the time or eliminated recess due to the perception that time is more productively spent on academics. Johnson & Jones, (2016) stated that increased pressure on schools to perform on standardized tests and the initiation of programs to improve student academic performance, such as Response to Instruction and Intervention had reduced the amount of time at the school day for students to have adequate frequency and duration for recess. Offering students the opportunity to enjoy time outside the classroom is highly appropriate as it provides the student with a much-needed break from their daily classroom routines. The paper will highlight the value and significance of recess in schools. It will also assess the effects of recess on academic achievement.
Value of recess in schools
Physical education for teenage students can be applied in teaching competencies involved in sports participation in natural frameworks modified to ensure full student participation in highly appropriate activities (Castelli et al., 2015). Sports education during recess provides a proper view for students, and it provides the necessary social skills in roles as captains and managers within teams. Educators can evaluate the behaviors of the teenagers and also the manner that they communicate with their peers. This helps teachers in intervening in situations that involve social isolation or aggression. Children can have meaningful social experiences during recess and should be fostered in schools.
Recess promotes social skills, which enable children to become resourceful in handling conflict resolution, development of leadership skills and also the negotiation of rules. Communication skills practiced during play allows a child to better comprehend the perspectives of others (Johnson & Jones, 2016). Unstructured play additionally, offers students the chance in partaking activities that develop a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Regularly scheduled recess time within an educational institution is highly essential for the emotional, cognitive, physical and social well-being of a child. This time is dedicated to the unstructured physical activity and play that enables children to rest, play, imagine, think, move and also socialize (Brown & Patte, 2012). After recess, children are highly more attentive and can perform cognitive functions within the classroom more effectively.
