Making Connections as a Teacher
A teacher’s work is dynamic and not all can be taught in colleges. One of the key ways teachers need to upskill themselves is by making connections. There is a wealth of experience and knowledge borne by other teachers which other can draw from. By interviewing and observing their colleagues, teachers can learn new educational philosophies which they can plug into their own to become better at their work. Because each student is different, schools and classes are different, then teachers need to adapt to any classroom and for any student to teach. This level of dynamism comes with experience and mostly from observing, interviewing and discussing with other teachers to learn their philosophy and approach to different problems.
Recently I sought to learn from other teachers to understand their philosophies. I found that different teachers have different approaches to teaching. Observed teaching is like a peer experience where teacher teach each other how they approach their classrooms and how they achieve their objectives. The teacher who is observing can learn a few things from the other teacher which he/she can apply to his/her classroom. It gives the teacher the time to learn from his/her colleagues and reflect on areas of improvement. On the other hand, the sit-in teacher can also suggest and or recommend areas for improvement for the other teacher. It is a mutually beneficial arrangement for both teachers and should be encouraged at all time.
Every teacher has his/her own educational philosophies. It embodies the beliefs they hold on how they should approach their work in and outside the classroom. Interviewing other teachers about their philosophies can inform individual approaches to teaching. For example, some teachers who choose to make the classroom as interactive as possible. Others teachers choose to develop student’s individual study habits to help them develop independent study habits.
Importance of continuous professional development
There are many researches that are carried out by professional teachers’ body, research institutions. Individual scholars etc. That are geared towards informing teachers on better ways to do their work.
