Technologies currently leading businesses into the third electronic commerce wave include e-readers, smart phones, tablets, and other electronic gadgets that can connect to the internet through wireless means. Additionally, devices including the Radio Frequency Identification, fingerprint readers, scanners, and microchip smart cards help in keeping track of data related to business products as well as in identification of people. The identification of people may also include identifying their spending habits. Finally, social sites such as Twitter and Facebook also comprise the third wave of e-commerce; usually, people share adverts as well as what they buy and sell on these sites.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has a mandate to coordinate the Internet's naming system and promote genuine competition as well as policy development on the Internet's unique identifiers. A domain name consists of two elements before and after “the dot”. The element to the right of the dot is known as the “top-level domain” or simply TLD. In this case, therefore, a gTLD is a generic top-level domain that is considered unsponsored. Such generic TLDs include .com; .net; .biz; .org; .info; and so on. A sTLD is a sponsored top-level domain that is controlled by a specific agency within a certain industry; a good example is .museum which is a TLD that is used by the Museum Domain Management Association (MDMA).

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) might be used in an intranet when security concerns do not exist or when such concerns do not matter. For an extranet, a VPN might be used when the private network to be used matches the security level of a particular company's private network.
