Pedro Martinez was born on October 25, 1971, to Paulino and Lapoldina Martinez in the Dominican Republic. His parents used to speak Spanish only. Pedro had an elder brother Ramon Martinez and both speak Spanish and English. They grew up together to be athletic. They played tee-ball when they were young and grew up to play baseball which they became better at it. Pedro was selected to join the national baseball team of the Dominican Republic. This saw him securing a professional baseball contract of three years for Los Angeles Dodgers on 1987. He made his major-league debut on September 24, 1992, when he started against Cincinnati Reds. During the game, he pitched innings but earned no decision. Later on, few days later he appeared relieved than the previous games but did not win the game. The major statistics of his first major-league appearance were as follows: 0-1 record, eight innings pitched, eight strikeouts and one walk, and 2.25 ERA (Pedro Martinez, n.d.).
Pedro was happy to be in major-leagues and was pleased to join his elder brother on pitching staff of Dodgers. Ramon was the best pitcher of Los Angeles Dodgers where he lead the team with 17 wins in 1991 and eight wins before his season was ended by an arm injury in 1992.
