Because the company tests new products with customers and is willing to take a loss if customers don’t like products, this could lead to increased opportunities costs for those products that company purchasing agents passed up and decreased profits.
OPPORTUNITIES

Every company has some operations that every department or the organization as a whole must accomplish to attain the overall objective. The cognitive function behind the accomplishment of these operations is what is referred to as operational thinking (Annarelli & Nonino, 2016). Strategic thinking brings together innovative ideas, processes, and operations that aim at the ultimate success of an organization in the future (Dionisio, 2017). Operational thinking aims at the short-term objectives that must be accomplished for the company to sustain its basic operations, whereas strategic thinking focuses on long-term goals (Dionisio, 2017). Also, operational thinking sticks to a structured methodology and is thus highly predictable whereas strategic thinkers value flexibility and innovation as long as the overall objective is not compromised. The ultimate goal of both operational thinking and strategic thinking is to come up with efficient mechanisms of running a company and eventually outshine the competitors.
A typical example of strategic thinking in Trade Joe’s case is the fact that all the employees, both new and old, are accustomed to a culture where they treat the customers with a lot of compassion, ambition, and excellence with soft skills. Trader Joe has also mastered the art of rewarding top performance, a long-term strategy to encourage the employees. Numerous scenarios from the case study depict aspects of operational thinking within Trader Joe. A case where the emphasis is put on items that attract more customers while discarding those whose costs are prone to inflation or generally not liked by the consumers is a case of operational thinking.
