Negotiation involves a discussion between two parties aiming to reach a mutually acceptable business deal or solution to a problem. Effective communication is integral to negotiation since it dispels ambiguity and makes the parties understand each other’s points of view. Effective communication strategies, patience, positive bodily and verbal gestures, and collaborative negotiation styles are imperative for a successful negotiator (Carvalho & Felipe, 2003). However, being impatient, assertive, introvert, domineering, and argumentative negatively impact communication skills. Based on my personality test results, my diplomatic role enhances my communication skills; however, my being introvert, an assertive advocate, and individualism negatively contributes to my communication skills.
A communicator always prefers to reach an all-inclusive decision about a financial deal or other business matters; for the same reason, he views an issue with an empathic lens. Such a negotiator is always willing to cooperate and makes things easy for others by patiently listening to their argument and reflecting positive and harmonious body gestures (David & James 1987). Since my role as a diplomat confers me with the responsibility of being a communicator, my rule is the sole factor behind my working as an effective communicator during negotiations. For the same reason, I prefer cooperative strategies with other parties to make mutually agreeable decisions. Similarly, I adopt a flexible, communicative strategy and attitude to help others fulfil their demands. I attempt to create an environment conducive to negotiation by accommodating other people’s points of view without compromising my views.
