What was the abolitionist movement? What were the main groups involved in abolitionism?
The abolitionist movement was a campaign that sought to end slavery. The groups involved in abolitionism included freed slaves, slaves, religious whites, and other European and American citizens who held firm beliefs against the institution of slavery.
Discuss the various ways Black people participated in abolitionism and the struggle for their own freedom.
One of the ways in which black people participated in abolitionism was by holding a secret and public gatherings. In these gatherings, educated and eloquent black people would talk about the immorality of slavery, thereby invoking rebellious attitudes among slaves. Another way was by publishing anti-slavery articles. A few freed and free-born slaves who had a mastery of the English language wrote articles that highlighted the immorality of slavery and challenged the American government to uphold the rights enshrined in the constitution. Slaves also ran away from their masters and helped other slaves escape. In addition to this, freed slaves would often harbor other slaves in their homes and protect them from authorities.
