The movie Carol is a romantic movie involving a young woman, Therese Belivett, who feels like her life is a mess, meaningless, and lost in that she is not going anywhere with it. The film follows the romantic life of Carol and Therese, who are from different backgrounds and find themselves entangled in a love affair in the 1950s. During these times, the conventional norms challenged such affairs, and theirs was not an exception. Yet, in their undeniable attraction to each other came an honest story that revealed the flexibility of the heart when change is on the forefront. In Endgame, Samuel Beckett focuses on a blind, incapacitated man and his servant. The play consists of four characters; Hamm (main character), his servant, and his parents. This paper will review these two films focusing on these two main characters and the paths they decided to follow.
Carol Film Brief Review
Carol is a movie involving to beautiful women (Therese and Carol). Carol is married but is not happy in her marriage, and she is older than Therese who is in her 20s. Carol lives a comfortable successful life, and has a daughter but Therese works in a Manhattan store as a clerk; she has a boyfriend as well who she is somewhat confused whether to be with him or not. The meeting of the two women, Carol and Therese, took place in Therese’s place of work, where they first make it look like a business meeting and interacted professionally. Still, in reality, the scene is flirty, sliced with ecstasies of danger. Then again, Carol forgets her gloves during this first encounter, which makes us question her intentions: maybe she did it on purpose, or maybe not (Haynes, 2015, 00:09:00-13:08). As the movie progresses, we still question Carol’s motive, and the audience starts to have an idea of what her motive is when Therese tells Carol about Richard’s plans of marrying her over their lunch date. Carol, in return, asks her, “would you like to marry him?” but Therese’s unclear path of life is evident in her response because she seems like she is not sure of what she wants in her relationship with Richard. She replies, “…well, I barely even know what to order for lunch…,” (Haynes, 2015, 00:22:00-20), then they both look at each other suggestively, possibly with questions in their minds.
Then again, Therese gets an invite from Carol and is to go to New Jersey, where carol stays. At this time, Carol had already separated from her husband, and the ongoing fight they have is accessing their daughter. So, when proceedings begin to determine who is to get sole custody of their daughter, Therese and Carol whisk away on an impulsive road trip into America. However, their road trip begins to run from something and towards a place where their bond shows possibilities of existence but turns out to be awful after their relationship is known, which annoys Carol (Haynes, 2015, 1:19:00-24:12).
