The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 is a documentary that indicates the progress of the Black Power movement featuring interviews of Angela Davis, Bobby Seale, Abiodun Oyewole, Stokely Carmichael, and other renowned leaders during the Black Power Movement (Luis et al. 176). The Black Power Movement desired safety and independence that was not present within the African American societies. The movement was aimed at assisting black people in attaining fairness and equality with the whites. It was also aimed at creating an integrated culture by eliminating racial discrimination and embracing diversity. The movement resulted in constructive outcomes across the country. The creation of black political and cultural institutions emphasized attaining racial pride and social equality.
Daughters of the Dust is a feminist film that shows the history and shift of slavery in the United States and how it impacted black females' effect (Chrysavgi 10). The main characters in this film fight to reshape their history from being known as slaves and people in isolation to people who have access to freedom and evolution socioeconomically.
According to Brooks and Hébert in the reading Gender, Race, and Media Representation, even though sex variations are found in biology, it is not clear how man has come to understand gender-based on culture. People perceive culture as to how they share and struggle for logic in social relations and experiences. It also states that society uses gender to emphasize what it is to be feminine or masculine. Race as a social structure can no longer be identified biologically, even though it has a basis in genetics and science. The leading indicator of race is skin color, and it determines people in two races as white and black.
Social /cultural/political/historical issues brought into focus in the films
Daughters of the Dust put much emphasis on cultural, historical, and political issues. For example, it talks of "entanglements of the market and visual economies," making a sociopolitical logic of the physique of a black woman (Chrysavgi 10). Here, the "body politic" shows the nationality's political, social, and communal scope, which is represented as "north" in the film. This gives a representation of the politicization of the black women's body, either sexually or economically.
