Information Culture in Independence Day
Network-Centric Warfare (NCW) makes it possible to rely on information and technology in the Command and Control Systems to gain advantage on the military front and also shows America’s dominance. David Levinson the satellite technician in “Independence Day” suggests that lieutenant Mitchell to shoot a can off the alien ship and the bullet bounces off, indicating that there is a protective shield. In the scene there are communication technicians and military personnel and the image of the alien craft is also shown in a computer. The special effects and set design scene focus on the advantages of computer, technology and access to information in warfare as the US fulfills her missions due to the capabilities.
When Mitchell shoots the cans and shied appears and Levinson demonstrates how this affects their ability to penetrate the shield and defeat the aliens. Levinson connects the captured alien ship to his laptop computer and shows how to attack it using a computer virus, but first there is a need to attack the mother ship (Emmerich).
