Hear how the piano and orchestra interact and play off each other, how the melody goes back and forth between the piano and different instruments of the orchestra.
There are two recital critiques to submit via Canvas during the semester (deadlines are in the syllabus). Each should be 750­–1000 words long. (This assignment description, for example has 867 words).
Your critique should include the following elements:
· The date, time and location of the recital--or the date and time you watched the performance on youtube.
· The name of the performer
· The names and dates of the pieces performed, and the names of the composers who wrote those pieces.
· Did any of the pieces have individual movements (smaller sections) listed on the program?
· What are the meanings of any titles of pieces or titles of movements?
· Compare the styles of the different pieces on the program. How do pieces written earlier in time sound different from pieces written later in time? You should talk about dynamics, tempo, and the ways in which the piano is used. Is the piano used to make song-like melodies, or is it being used for rhythmic effect? Are lots of notes used at the same time, or just a few? Are both rhythm and melody happening at the same time? Be sure to talk about all the pieces on the program.
· From your own knowledge of piano playing so far, describe the physical approach that the performer had to the piano. Describe the performer’s posture, movement, and overall use of their body.
· What parts of the recital did you really like? Why? Be sure to talk about aspects of the music here—talk about the pieces in terms of melody, rhythm, tempo, dynamics and so on. You can also talk about the performer’s interpretation.
· What parts of the recital did you enjoy less? Why? Again, be sure to give details about the music and the performer.
· One of the main jobs of a pianist is to make sure that the audience can hear the melody (when there is one)—even when there are lots of other things happening in the music. How did this pianist succeed in the pieces on this program?
These critiques will be graded as follows:

Composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff in the 1990s, the Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, is a concerto for orchestra and piano. For the first time, this work was premiered in November 1901, with Alexander Siloti serving as the conductor. It is indeed one of the best and most popular pieces by Sergei Rachmaninoff, which helped him gain recognition as a concerto composer all over the world. In this video, a big group of composers, headed by Hélène Grimaud can be found playing Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18. No doubt, the way Hélène Grimaud has presented this composition is matchless. I found this video on YouTube the previous week when I was feeling depressed and wanted to soothe my nerves.
For me, the best way to manage depression, stress or anxiety is by listening to performances like this. The 37-minute long performance of Hélène Grimaud and their group made me a big fan, and I could observe a couple of interesting things. The main theme was played by a number of junior violinists or musicians along with Hélène Grimaud. The opening movement started with a number of bell-like tollings on the piano that built interest, eventually climaxing in the introduction of the core theme.
In the very first section, the orchestra, according to my observations, carried the Russian-character melody. Right after the completion of the first part of the theme, a transition could be found in Hélène Grimaud’s performance. She was quick at moving from the first theme to the second theme, which can be regarded as the lyrical second theme. The unstable and agitated development borrowed motives from these two impressive and marvelous themes, giving the melody a unique impression and changing the keys to an extent. This was indeed a new musical idea that took some time to form, and once it was formed, I felt even more excited and relaxed.
