Introduction and Synopsis
Menace II Society is a movie depicting a young street hustler as he attempts to survive through the challenges and temptations that characterize poor neighborhoods, particularly in search of a better standard of living. The film directors include Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes. The drama film writers include the Hughes brothers, in collaboration with Tyger Williams. Produced in 1993, the film demonstrates a violent hood drama-thriller that happens in South Central Los Angeles, California (Hughes et al., 1993). The movie setting is an impoverished inner-city neighborhood inhabited by African Americans. The film plot follows the protagonist’s (Kaydee “Caine” Lawson) life and his close friends. Caine is depicted as a novice drug user and dealer raised by highly spiritual grandparents after his mother died due to a drug overdose and his father was killed in a drug deal gone sour. Caine’s life can be described as increasingly deviant, and his close friends demonstrate anti-social behavioral tendencies. As the film ends, Caine struggles to abstain from drug abuse and dealer racket and finds that it is a tedious journey to achieve true transformation. With respect to political context, the film depicts the brutal urban violence and social vices that characterize impoverished African-American communities (Gamble, 2018). This paper will argue that Menace II Society does little to address the perceived stereotypical criminal activities that characterize Black neighborhoods because it frames the picture of Black experiences laden with frustrations and odds that the protagonists attempt to
