In this Ted talk, Gabe Brown from North Dakota shares his perspective and experiences about regenerative agriculture and its ability to transform food systems. He also explains how conventional practices in farming, including monoculture, tillage, and synthetic inputs, result in soil degradation erosion and decreased productivity in farms (Brown, 2016, 2:10). In the video, Brown explains how he uses crop rotation, cover cropping, and no-till farming to regenerate land to improve soils.
How a farmer turned 90 acres of wasteland into a lush green forest in Odisha
The video focuses on how a woman in India turned wasted land into a green forest. According to this video, organic farming is not widespread in most parts of India, and the farmer depends on trial and error (Down To Earth, 2018, 1:59). Within one year, the farmer gathered, grew, and preserved approximately eight hundred varieties of traditional seeds. Her efforts helped to develop an essential repository of seeds which helps alleviate climate change's impacts.
Reflection
After watching these three videos, I learned several interesting new things about land and soil conservation. For example, in the Ted talk about Gabe Brown, I learned how regenerative agriculture provides a sustainable and holistic approach to farming, benefiting small-scale farmers, consumers, and the world. Specifically, in this Ted Talk, I learned of a new terminology chelate binds metals, including copper, magnesium, zinc, and iron, which provide a lot of nutrients to plants, and failure to take these nutrients they become vulnerable to diseases (Brown, 2016, 5:10). The video by Gabe Brown introduced me to tenets of soil health like armor which is found in the soil surface.
In the video of the farmer who turned a wasteland into a green forest, I learned about cyclonic storms, how seeds tolerate heavy rain, and waterlogging (Down To Earth, 2018, 3:39). I also learned that specific species, including Sabai grass, bamboo, and hill broom, can be used by farmers to arrest topsoil (Down To Earth, 2018, 4:21). In the Video,” Changing Paradigms Regenerative Agriculture” I learned an interesting concept on changing paradigms which improves the natural environment and human health (Tom's Outdoors, 2021, 7:25). Throughout this video, I learned the power of regenerative agriculture in improving resilience and profitability in farms and its implications on human health.
