Apollo 13 is not only a great movie but it is also one that showcases numerous effective leadership behaviors. The leadership behaviors of the NASA team at the Mission Control Center as well as those of the astronauts were instrumental in navigating the many challenges experienced during the mission and ensuring that the astronauts made it safely back to earth. My two favorite leadership behaviors from the movie are adapting to change and inspiration of other people.
I think the most crucial leadership behavior that facilitated the safe return of the astronauts to earth was the ability to adapt to change. The NASA team experienced many challenges including the replacement of Ken Mattingly just two days before the launch, explosion and leaking of oxygen tanks, having to abort the mission to the moon, CO2 rising to toxic levels, and the need to power down to reduce power consumption. ...
