The Shawshank redemption which relies heavily on great storytelling is a hybrid film that encompasses both crime and drama was directed by Frank Darabont. The film which was adapted from Stephen king novella “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” takes the audience on a trip of gloom and optimism (Shawshank Redemption, 1994). In the film, the main character Andy Dufresne is wrongfully accused of killing his wife and her lover and he is sentenced to serve two consecutive life sentences (Maslin, 1994). The film covers difficult time Andy experiences at the prison and the eventual relationship between him and an inmate named Ellis “Red” Redding. The film revolves around Red who landed in Shawshank prison at the age of 19 and serves as the narrator throughout.
Red’s narration helps in identifying with the prisoners (Shawshank Redemption, 1994). This unique narration reveals some common traits shared among the characters produces sympathy. Sense of fate and sympathy for the incarcerated criminals and details of how Andy escapes from jail, has been greatly brought out by Red’s narration and the dialogue.
Memorable and informative quotes have been widely used in the film thus making it even more interesting. For instance, Andy tells reds that, “You either have to start living or you got to start dying” (Shawshank Redemption, 2012). This makes a viewer possess to rethink about what life entails and probably how to come out of difficulties. Andy further says, “Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies” (Shawshank Redemption, 2012). Normally, some good quotes tend to sharpen wits of an individual and that is one thing that is evident when watching Shawshank redemption (Gonzalez, 2004). It is not just an ordinary movie that you watch and forget. The quotes trigger my inner feeling. I feel like my success is a hope away. Andy makes me feel like I only need to have hope in life to achieve anything I have ever hoped for. The film is among the few films that you watch and have your thinking changed in a more positive way because of the memorable quotes.
Music played in the prison is a turning point in the movie. The effect of music in the film cannot be forgotten especially its ability to reach more people and the ability to cause surrealistic feeling. Andy, while playing the records sent by the state on the intercom, the camera catches prisoners enjoy listening to the record (Shawshank Redemption, 2012). Use of many close-ups in the film especially when the inmates were listening to the music has exposed the fact that simple things such as music can also affect prisoners’ feelings. The music, as shown in the scenes where prisoners are evenly spaced, reveal its ability to be listened to or enjoyed by great masses of people. It is apparent that music played in the film is largely enjoyed by the prisoners and exposes their human character (Gonzalez, 2004). Through the music, a viewer understands that even inmates ha...
