The Shape of the Motion, The Tilt of the Earth and Kepler’s Second and Third Laws

Lab Report Instructions:

The lab paper will be due during week 8. It should be about 1 printed page, double spaced. Using a planetarium program, such as Stellarium (available online as an interactive program, or as a free download), plot the movement of the Sun at noon on each day of the year for the whole year. In the paper, describe the shape of the motion, and explain it using the tilt of the Earth and Kepler’s second and third laws.

The Concept of Motion
From the sun’s north pole, every planet orbits the sun in an anticlockwise path. Furthermore, the planets’ orbits are lined with the ecliptic plane, making Kepler’s explanation of the Earth’s motion untenable. Rotation and revolution are the Earth’s two motions. The Earth’s rotation is its movement on its axis, whereas the planet’s revolution is its travel around the sun in a fixed orbit or route. The axis is an imaginary line that intersects the orbit plane at a tilt angle of 66 ½ degrees. The orbits of the Earth are ellipses, not circles, with a variety of features. They are defined by two places, each known as focus; the amount of flattening, known as eccentricity; and, finally, the major axis, which is the longest axis of ellipse’s, and the axis which are minor, the shortest axis of ellipses.
According to the second law of Kepler, the imaginary lines connect every planet, and also the sun, which sweeps equal ...
