Nuts are seed kernels widely used in cooking or eaten as a snack. They can easily be confused by legumes, but most nuts have shells that can be edible or not. There are various types of nuts commonly consumed by human beings, and they include: Almonds, Brazil nuts, Cashew nuts, Hazelnuts, Macadamia nuts, Pecans, Pine nuts, Pistachios, Peanuts and Walnut
Effects of nuts consumption on weight loss.
The relationship between nuts and body weight gain has had many controversies over the years. The general public has perceived nuts to be fattening and unhealthy. There is a common misconception that frequent consumption of nuts tends to increase the possibility of being obese; this has been made worse by health professionals who believe that nut consumption by hypercholesterolemia patients leads to more weight gain. However, according to Vadivel V. et al., Previous research has made it clear that the addition of nuts to the regular diet does not adversely affect body weight.
Human beings consume various types of nuts, each having specific effects on body weight control. They are all packed with nutrients, with each providing calories, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorous, copper, manganese, and selenium. Though varying in amounts, one can rest assured that consumption of nuts will give them all of the above benefits.
Almonds are the most consumed nuts in the United States, and they have cardioprotective effects since they are a great source of unsaturated fats (Vadivel, V. et al., 2012). They are energy-dense foods with high-fat content; however, clinical studies and observations have shown that their consumption does not increase body weight or BMI. Studies have shown that peanuts, walnut, and mixed nuts have a minimum effect on weight gain.
Walnuts have been shown to contain good enough melatonin, which is a powerful antioxidant (Vadivel, V. et al., 2012). Consumption of peanuts and food made by peanut oils has shown a very high level of oxidative factors and healthy lipids compared to a low-fat diet. Pistachios have cholesterol-lowering effects due to their oxidative status.
Therefore, it is safe to say that consumption of nuts has no remarkable effect on a person's weight gain. They can be incorporated into a weight loss diet since they have a filling impact over time. Since nuts are considered high caloric foods, they will easily provide the daily caloric requirements of a person preventing a lot of food intake. The misconceptions about nuts consumption are still powerful, which is why health workers and anyone with the proper understanding of the nutritional components of nuts need to be alert and share the knowledge with the general population lacking the insight. Nuts indeed have high-fat content, but most of them are unsaturated, which is poorly absorbed and leads to energy expenditure by a person's body.
