Lab Report Instructions:

Introduction:
You can think of the introduction as the background information you provide to someone who does not know anything about the subject. It should give the reader basic information so that he or she can understand the results and the discussion.
You may want to include at least this basic information in the introduction: 1. what osmosis is and why it is an important process for the proper functioning of cells, 2. what isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic mean, 3. how the cell membrane is organized and influenced by osmosis. You should clearly state your hypothesis(es) and your predictions) in the intro. See LAB04 PowerPoint, slide 11. Instead of dialysis bag, syrup, and methylene blue, we are using red blood cells, water, and solutions of sodium chloride.
Materials and Methods:
You may want to describe each step you did in the experiment but not the results.
The idea of the material and methods section is to provide a 'recipe' for the reader in case he or she wants to repeat the experiment. Do not write a list (do not copy from the manual something like: 1-..., 2-..., etc.). Describe in paragraph form.
The answer to these questions should be included in this section: 1. why you looked through the tube 2. why you checked the samples under the microscope.
Results:
Present the data table and describe briefly (one paragraph) what you found in the experiment without interpretation or analysis. (That's for conclusion next.)
Conclusion:
In this section you go back to your hypotheses and predictions and compare them with your results. You have. to "discuss" the results: Do your results support or reject your hypothesis? Did you see what you predicted? Why (explain)? Why not (speculate)? Elaborate a little bit on that. You may want to (briefly) propose another experiment that may give more insight into the subject or propose some improvement in the experimental design that may improve this one.

Introduction
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules down their concentration gradient. Osmosis facilitates the proper functioning of cells by ensuring they adapt to the changes in conditions of the cytoplasm inside the cell membrane. A solution is described as hypertonic when it has a higher solute concentration than the cell. A hypotonic solution has a lower solute concentration than the cell. An isotonic solution has an equal concentration to the cell. Most cells are located in positions characterized by lower or higher numbers of dissolved particles compared to cytoplasm within the cell membrane; thus, osmosis facilitates water transportation out of or into the cell based on contextual solute concentrations (Verma et al., 2016).
Hypothesis: Red blood cells placed in the isotonic solution will shrink because water will get out of the cells via osmosis, prompting a decrease in volume.
Materials and Methods
The required materials include 0.9% sodium chloride solution, 10% sodium chloride solution, distilled water, test tube rack, test tubes, blood sample, microscope, pipettes, biohazard container, slides, and slide covers. In phase 1, add 10 percent sodium chloride solution to test tube 1. Use the pipette to place a drop of the blood sample into the test tube, making sure to discard the pipette into the biohazard container. Next, view at the laboratory manual through the solution to establish whether it is clear or cloudy, making sure to record the observation in the lab data. Place the microscope slide on the laboratory bench. Use the pipette to place a drop of blood solution from test tube one on the slide, then discard the pipette in a biohazard container. Next, place a cover clip on top of the slide and put the slide on the microscope to establish the blood cell's appearance. Record the observations.
