Dichotomous Key and the American Ginseng
Lab Assignment 4
In addition to the usual cover page, your assignment will include your answers to two questions.
1. Create a dichotomous* key that – using observable characteristics -- differentiates between the following organisms. Next to each common name, give the correctly-formatted scientific name. If making your own observations (from an actual organism), you do not need to cite your sources, but if you use information (text or image) you obtained, that source must be cited; there is no need to cite a source for the scientific names.
* See the "I have a question" section on the UR Courses homepage for an example of a dichotomous key.
birch tree
bracket fungus
club moss
horsetail
juniper bush
“Indian pipe”
liverwort
“old man’s beard”
peat moss
pine tree
spike moss
spruce tree
staghorn fern
sweetgrass
tamarack tree
tobacco
2. Choose a land plant found in Canada that has different uses/importance for Indigenous vs. non-Indigenous people. In your own words, and in up to three well-written paragraphs:
Indicate the common name (in English), the Indigenous name (and which Indigenous language it is in), and the scientific name using proper scientific nomenclature.
Compare and contrast the use of the plant by both Indigenous vs. non-Indigenous people.
You must cite, and provide a full reference for, all sources used.

The Lab Assignment 4: Biology Lab Report
The dichotomous key is an essential scientific tool used for the correct classification of organisms, plans or rocks in the natural world accurately. Some of the items have closely similar but different features; therefore, distinguishing one from the other is facilitated by the dichotomous key.
Question 1: Dichotomous Key
The following are scientific names given to each of the items in the dichotomous key to enhancing their identity.
Birch tree - Betula (deciduous hardwood tree)
Bracket fungus - Genoderma (white-rot fungus)
Club moss - lycopodialle (homosporous)
Horsetail - Equisetum arvense (herbaceous perennial plant)
Juniper bush - Juniperus communis (corniferous shrubs)
Indian pipe - Monotropa uniflora (a herbaceous perennial plant that lacks chlorophyll), also called ghost plant (Miser, 2018).
Liverworts - Marchantiophyta (non-vascular land plants)
Old man's beard - Clematis vitalba (deciduous climbing vine), also called traveller's joy
Peat moss - Sphagnum (dark brown fibrous product of Sphagnum)
Pine tree - Pinus (coniferous shrub or tree species)
Spike moss - Selaginella ( tiny vascular plants)
Spruce tree - Picea (corniferous evergreen trees)
Staghorn ferns - Platycerium (epiphytic ferns)
Sweet grass - Hierochloe odorata
Tamarack tree - Laryx laricina
Tobacco - Nicotiana tabacum
