A Focus on the Democratic Republic of the Congo
The main point in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a weak state is that it has never existed as a sovereign political entity. For almost 20 years now, the Democratic Republic of Congo has been a place for a deadly conflict that has claimed many lives. The instability and absence of peace and order in the country is rooted in the disunity of the people that live in the country. History dictates the exploitation done to them, primarily by the Westerners who have come to order to have a share of the richness of natural resources in the country. “The Congo Free State” was a forced labor scheme that was introduced by King Leopold II of Belgium in order to allow European powers to “legally” gain the power to take resources.
Such laws and policies were inconsiderately made, as the social or tribal make-up of hundreds of different tribes and languages were put into an irreversible cycle of cultural genocide. Since these tribes and groups of people have never co-existed with one another, but were forced to adhere to a national identity, disunity and conflict was guaranteed for the Democratic Republic of Congo. During that period, as many as 10 million people perished, symbolizing an oxymoron known as the “Free State Period”.
The root cause of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s weakness is that early and irresponsible intervention of other countries destroyed the cultures and traditions that were endemic to the country. The culture of the people is what unifies them, but in the case of DRC, where indigenous culture has been wiped out and replaced by a culture of violence, conflict and hate towards each other, unity seems unattainable. Throughout DRC’s history, the ruling elites have antagonized ethnic groups by supporting regional strong men who plunder resources — sowing confusion, fear and insecurity in the process.
