In the past thirty years, the political choices of several States have dramatically changed. This owes to the reality that the Republican advantage in the Electoral College has changed in the favor of the Democratic Party. In fact, democrats increased their numbers (in 2008) in both houses of congress results in the notion that a new Democratic era began. In the 1980s through 2000, Democrats won four of the six while Republicans won four of the six presidential elections. This paper argues that the Republicans had an easier path to winning the 270 votes in the Electoral College, but the Democrats presidential candidate faces an easier path in 2016.
Over the last forty years, the Republicans had an easier path to winning the 270 electoral votes. In this era, most Americans believed the Republicans had locked in the Electoral College. For instance, the Republicans won 16 States in the six elections of the 1980s period and an additional five of the six. This consisted of 179 electoral as of the 2000 census. On the contrary, Democrats won the State of Minnesota and the District of Columbia in the six elections. However, this trend changed in favor of the Democrats in the recent elections. As an evidence of this, the Democrats won 18 States in the last six elections. Based on the recent Census data, this States represent 242 electoral votes.
