Initially the British men had gone to India for trading purposes. The industrial revolution that had taken place in their country demanded the availability of raw materials and they therefore saw it apt to move to India in search of the raw materials. They also moved to India because they needed a market for their finished goods. However, when they got to India they took over the country, ruled its citizens directly, and controlled the country’s resources. The British colonial rule influenced the country of India in the following ways.
‘New schools were started by the British, by precisely the government, by missionaries and by private enterprise. Those schools were at levels including universities. The English education was used in all schools of higher education. Though only a tiny of Indians attended the schools, those who received a fine English education became the badge of an educated man. They studied English ideas about education and nationalism and became the eventual leaders of the Indian movement
British introduced ideas such as freedom, equality and human rights. Before the British took over the country of India, there was a lot unfairness in the country. The women were considered to be the inferior gender and men harshly treated most of them. Education was only limited to the affluent people. However, with the British colonial rule, the Indians gained the understanding of their rights and opportunities were accessible to everyone. Women got empowered and therefore practices such as women discrimination and early marriages were unheard of as they were no longer practiced.
The British enhance the transportation system in the country. The means of transport in the country before the British colonial rule were camels and pack animals. However, the British needed better means of transport so that the transportation of the finished goods could be made easier and effective. They therefore constructed railways, which made trade in goods more effective by joining the internal markets with the ports. Even though the building of the railways was aimed at benefiting them, the country of India finally benefited, as there was a national awakening.
