* INTRODUCTION
In 1600 C.E., Muslims entered the city of Jerusalem, conquered it and took control. Upon control of the city, the Muslims allowed the Christians and the Jews to make pilgrimages to visit the city of Jerusalem and live there for an extra tax. This led to the Crusades. The Crusades were a series of eight Christian military expeditions that were fought against the conquering Muslims for the Holy Lands between 1096 and 1270 C.E. This research seeks to analyze the causes, characteristics and the effects of the Crusades as well as prove the argument that the war was a process that can be termed as evil, uncomfortable and unpleasant activities with positive results.[Class PowePoint Presentation on the Crusades.]

The Crusades were caused by a number of issues. The first cause is because the Holy Land was closed to Christians. The Jews and the Christians wanted their land back after a group of Muslims called the Seljuk Turks, in 1095 C.E., entered and took control of the Holy Lands closing it to the Jews and all Christian pilgrims. As a form of retaliation, the Byzantine Emperor, urged Pope Urban II to aid the Christians regain the Holy Lands. Other factors that led to the series of wars include the call to give the Roman Catholic Church the power over the Byzantine Empire. Another cause was the call to reduce the series of wars taking place at home where Nobles were fighting the Muslims instead of each other for power. Further, the Crusades had several characteristics which include the fact that the First Crusade started in 1095 where the Crusaders captured the Holy Land in 1099 and held it in their control up until 1291 with the main campaigns being performed in Edessa, ...
