Immigration Laws In The United States And Their Impact

Essay Instructions:

Paper is due 11/26 by midnight.
ALL SOURCES MUST BE USED FROM http://www(dot)americanyawp(dot)com/ This online textbook has primary and secondary sources that are accessible to complete this essay. Please make sure every citation reflects the use of the http://www(dot)americanyawp(dot)com/ textbook. Thank you.
This paper requires a thesis statement. This is just an example of a thesis statement. "To organize your argument you will need a Rule of Three Thesis Statement: Cheeseburgers are the best food for a meal since they lead restaurant sales, are popular with average Americans, and have wholesome ingredients." In this situation you would then write in the first paragraph the summary of the three points that support your argument of why cheeseburgers are the best food. The other three paragraphs would talk about each point in each paragraph. For example paragraph two would talk about how the leading restaurant sales are cheeseburgers and information about that and the next paragraph will talk about information about how popular they are with average Americans, etc. The fourth paragraph will talk about the conclusion of all three points you used to support your argument and then you must write the thesis statement again. Please put the thesis statement in BOLD when writing the paper so I am able to easily identify it and my professor. Now onto the actual assignment I just needed to make sure this was understood because this is a important concept and for some reason very difficult for previous writers to understand. Please reach out to me if any of this does not make sense.
Overview
In this exercise you will use all the skills you have learned in the previous exercises to write a full length, rule of three, historical essay on the prompt below.
As a reminder, an analytical essay contains an introduction setting up the context (with a clear rule of three thesis statement as the last sentence), three paragraphs of the body (in the same format as the one paragraph assignment) - one for each key point in the thesis statement, and a conclusion.
The Essay Prompt
PROMPT: The United States saw waves of immigration and several changes in immigration law from the mid-1860s to the late 20th century. Discuss the impact immigration, immigration laws, and the backlash to immigration had on the social and economic development of the United States. Consider ethical arguments and civics in your discussion of immigration and reaction to immigration. Also analyze change over time in your response.
Hint: Think broadly here as you scattershoot/concept map your essay before writing. Start making a list of immigration related facts and primary sources to use in your response. Consider the impact of laws contracting and expanding immigration. Consider who the immigrants were in the various waves, where they went when they arrived in the US, and what they did when they got there. Consider also how immigrants influenced American society and culture and also why there was often a backlash to immigrants. Once you have jotted down your facts, choose the strongest points and supporting evidence to write your essay, making sure you address the prompt fully. Be sure to consider evidence from the entire time period of the prompt in your essay.
Hint 2: Make sure that you integrate your discussion of Change over Time and Ethics/Civics throughout your analysis, not just in one paragraph. This means that Change over Time and Ethics/Civics WILL NOT be key points in your rule of three thesis statement.
Requirements for the Signature Essay
Must be in Rule of Three format with a introduction and strong thesis statement, 3 paragraphs of the body (each with their own thesis statement - one for each of the three key points of your overall thesis), and conclusion. So a minimum of 5 paragraphs.
This is a fact based essay, you must provide specific and detailed evidence for your hypotheses.
You must utilize a minimum of three primary sources from the assigned materials as evidence in your essay
You must utilize a minimum of three secondary sources from the assigned materials as evidence in your essay
You may only use materials assigned in this course for your essay (we have vetted all the materials utilized in this course, other materials may not be appropriate or accurate)
DO NOT quote secondary sources
You may briefly quote a primary source (a phrase or a sentence) before immediately analyzing the relevance of the quote - a quote cannot stand alone as explanation or evidence
You must consider change over time in this essay
You must consider ethics/ethical decision making in this essay
You must consider change over time in this essay
Don't forget about geography, where something takes place matters and it may be important to your argument.
You must use Turabian citation style in this essay; all citations must be footnote style citations (no parenthetical cites allowed, no endnotes/works cited at the end, you need footnotes). Be sure to review how to properly cite a primary source that may be contained in another work and be sure to use page numbers where possible.
12 pt type, 1 inch margins, double-spaced
NOTE ON CITATIONS
CITATIONS are REQUIRED for this essay. You will lose points for failure to cite or incorrect style of citations.
How the Assignment is Graded
The assignment is worth up to 200 points. The following factors are taken into account when we grade:
RULE OF THREE THESES - Do you have a well thought out and clear overall thesis in your introduction? Do you have a thesis statement for each of your three paragraphs of the body? Do the paragraphs of the body follow the overall thesis statement?
EVIDENCE - You must have solid evidence for each point you raise in the thesis. Evidence is not simply a statement, there must be an explanation of how that evidence supports the thesis statement.
Example: If you were writing a paragraph on the causes of the Cold War, you might use the Baruch Plan as an example. Simply writing "the Baruch Plan was a cause of the Cold War" in your paragraph would not be enough and would not be analytical. However, the following sentences do provide a good analysis of this piece of evidence:
"One cause of the Cold War was the failure of the United States and the Soviet Union to agree upon a plan for nuclear disarmament after World War 2. The Baruch Plan, presented by the US, would maintain the American atomic weapon advantage for the foreseeable future. This played into Stalin's suspicions of the Americans' true motivations toward the USSR."
Did you use the minimum number of primary sources? secondary sources?
HISTORICAL ACCURACY, CLARITY, AND LOGIC
Is your argument clear and does it make sense? Is it historically accurate? Does your evidence prove your point? Does your analysis answer the prompt? Have you considered change over time and geographic differences in your essay?
PROPER CITATION
Have you properly cited? Have you used Turabian/Chicago? You must also FOOTNOTE. Parenthetical cites are NOT allowed.
GRAMMAR, SPELLING AND MECHANICS
Is the essay up to college standards for grammar and spelling? Is it an analytical essay? Does it meet minimum length and formatting requirements?

A massive wave of immigration characterized the American colonial era. Most of the immigrants were moving to the US in seek of better employment and education opportunities as compared to what they had in their countries. Also, the immigrants came to America against the will of most Americans, and this resulted in a lot of backlashing on the immigrants. Therefore, America took an initiative of amending the immigration laws to fit the changes that were taking place. Therefore, the immigration, immigrant laws and the backlashing of slaves resulted in an introduction of new cultures, improvement in the workforce and the development of social classes.[Winthrop Jordan, White over Black: American Attitudes Toward the Negro, 1550–12 (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1968), 7. Retrieved from /]
The immigration wave resulted in the immigrants introducing their ways of life to their American hence diluting the American culture. Some of the cultures were good while others were deemed by the Americans to be bad hence, resulting to the backlashing of the immigrants. For instance, the British, German and Irish people marked the second wave of immigrants into America. The Americans adopted some of their ways of life such as the manner in which they did business transactions. Most of the cultures are still evident in today's American culture. The helpful cultures were adopted with a lot of respect because the American new that they would benefit from it. On the other hand, cultures that would not be of any benefit to the American contributed to the backlashing of the immigrants. Therefore, the appreciation of the immigrant's culture by the American was an indication that the American people valued ethics as part of their guiding principles in life.
The immigration wave resulted in an improvement of the workforce because the Americans had people with various skills that would be beneficial in the workplaces. During the third wave, most of the Asians came into America in search for job opportunities and religious freedom. Therefore, this means that they had new skills to introduce in the job market of the Americans. By 1914, 24 percent of the labor force consisted of immigrants. As a result, the immigration act was formed as a result of the backlashing that the Americans had on the increasing number of immigrants. The law prioritized the Americans and the people who had families in America while putting restrictions among the immigration of certain people from the Pacific islands and Asia. In addition, most of the Chinese immigrants came to America as a result of job outsourcing and therefore, they introduced new work skills in the economy of the Americans. By the year 1800. There were over 300,000 Chinese workers in America and, therefore, the Chinese Exclusion Act was formed to forbid more Chinese immigrants from coming to America for the next ten years. It was ethical for the Americans to value the skills of the Chinese in the job market. Such skills are also being used in today's American economy especially in the construction sector.[Elizabeth Sanders, The Roots of Reform: Farmers, Workers, and the Ameri...
