Overview
As American citizens, we can use our voices to communicate to our authority figures about how their decisions can impact society. One of the ways that we as citizens can participate in the creation of a future where all citizens are treated equitably is to voice our collective needs to those that we have placed in positions of authority. Before we do so, we should understand the relationship among power, privilege, and other socio-structural factors and the life circumstances of individuals from different groups. This paper will give you space to think through these ideas and to better prepare you to make your voice heard and have a positive impact on the world.

Power can be defined as the ability of an individual, group, or institution to exercise control or influence people to achieve specific goals despite potential resistance and opposition. People in positions of authority can exercise power over their subjects. Privilege is a term that describes special rights, advantages, or even immunity availed or granted to individuals or groups based on their social characteristics. The relationship between power and privilege is that they both work in social systems that perpetuate social differences and dictate how individuals perceive others. For example, whites have power and privilege, which explains why racism against African Americans persists to date (Johnson 69). In this case, privilege can be described as power granted to some individuals or groups over others.
Privilege and power can also be discussed in light of such concepts as economic inequality. Economic inequality entails the income or wealth gap between groups, individuals, or entire countries (Norris 17). The gap can result from the social differences facilitated and perpetuated by power and privilege. The same example of whites and African Americans can be used to illustrate this link. For instance, the whites are in positions of power and privilege, allowing them easier access to resources and wealth and higher incomes from employment. Power and privilege have created a society where the economic well-being of an individual depends on race and other socioeconomic characteristics.
In my perspective, the relationship between power and privilege and social problems is that social systems built on ...
