Social issues are the results of inevitable changes as these occur due to the difference of opinions of people influenced by several factors. Homosexuality, for example, is considered to be a social issue, not only based on religion but also in a culture that leads to major discrimination in various ways. With this in mind, this paper will discuss how homosexuality marriage is perceived in Reform Judaism and Roman Catholicism.
Homosexual Marriage
Marriage between opposite sex has always been ideally perceived as a romanticist perspective where some people tend to dream of such events at an early age. Yet at some point, when the concept of homosexuality was slowly finding its way for acceptance, the marriage of the same sex soon arose. Brow (2009) presented that as people conceived that heterosexual marriage is a norm, the emergence of homosexual marriages was perceived negatively. Issues regarding promiscuity and infidelity, as well as negative parental influence, arose as people continues to fight for the rights of homosexual marriage. Though some people refer to it as an abnormality, as the world continues to change, the number of people believing in their rights is also increasing, and though discrimination can still be found, there are now people who support their true identity and stand.
Reform Judaism vs Roman Catholicism
According to Kaplan (2008), Reform Judaism was established in the 18th century where it was perceived as the first movement that challenges and conquers the current establishment of enlightenment and emancipation of the Jews. He also explained that this refers to the adaptation of practices and beliefs towards the current trend in modern society, as such, this is sometimes called Progressive Judaism or Liberal Judaism. From those words themselves, this religion accepts the identity of change and creates their tradition following the new society that they are in. To elaborate, this implies how the word of Torah should now be perceived word for word, and that it accepts the idea of development in all aspects of humanity such as ethical, scientific, and more. While in terms of homosexual marriage, Moss & Kern (2008) discussed that at the start, the Jewish religion did not accept it but as the reform movement took place and formed the Reform Jewish, the marriage of the same sex was approved and implemented.
On the other hand, Roman Catholic Church is considered to be the most dominant religion in the Western world, in terms of quantity.
