From Environmentalist to Hot Chocolate Distributor: My Volunteering Experience
Since I was a child, I have found a clean environment peaceful and relaxing. In the same way, I find pleasure in chocolates once in a while. This childhood memory was invoked after completing a 15 hours volunteer experience because chocolate and the environment were the key highlights. The volunteer experience began with grueling outdoor activities that culminated in a thanksgiving parade in the end, though each of the four events is exclusive. The current paper summarizes this volunteer experience in which I went from being an environmentalist to a chocolate distributor.
On December 4th, between 10.00 AM and 12.30 PM, I volunteered in an environmental project at Twin Park in New Rochelle. Volunteers were tasked with managing the growth of invasive plant species and participating in litter picking to help in sustaining the health of the forest and Hutchinson River. Invasive plants are plants that are non-native or whose introduction can lead to economic, environmental, and health consequences. We managed these by weeding the invasive ones out. While picking the litter, I noticed that chocolate wrappings were in plenty. One of the quotes I got from this event is that "humans cannot do without the environment, but the environment can do without humans."
