Litterati App Reflective Writing
Technology can be used to unite people from different parts of the world so that they can form a community with a common objective of conserving the environment (TS). Jeff Kirschner’s “This App Makes it Fun to Pick up Litter” depicts how the individual came up with an idea to eradicate haphazard disposal of litter (Kirschner, 2016). Kirschner was influenced (PV) by his two children when one of them spotted a tub of rubbish in a creek while the family was touring the woods of Oakland. Before the father of two developed Litterati App, he used his Instagram account to mobilize individuals by taking pictures of litter, which they came across in their daily lives. Apparently (T), after collecting numerous photos, Kirschner came across a picture from China. That was the point when he realized that he had formed a community with the primary objective of cleaning the environment. Litterati App uses a Google Map to reveal the geographical location and timestamp of the uploaded images. Kirschner’s technology was used to determine cigarette pieces littered on the streets of San Francisco. On that note (T), the data was used by the court to defend double taxation of cigarettes that enables the city to generate about $4 million per year. Kirschner believes that every town has a unique fingerprint of litters. By using that fingerprint (T), one can determine the source of a particular problem and suggest an appropriate solution. For example, in Oakland’s downtown, the Litterati community gathered 1,500 pieces of hot sauce packets, the majority of which were unopened (Kirschner, 2016).
