There are several definitions of the word thesis that tend to make it challenging for scholars to have an exact meaning of the term. Aristotle gave one of the earliest definitions. According to him, “A ‘thesis’ is a hypothesis of a distinguished philosopher that conflicts with common opinion.” This description, though considered vague by other philosophers or linguists, it provided a basis for them to come up with a clearer and obvious meaning of the word. A thesis is a definable claim that offers an opportunity for a logical discussion of ideology. It is a theory that its position provides a piece of evidence to be proved or sustained. It also articulates the primary idea of a study, subject, and essay. It attempts to make a claim that directly answers a specific question. The statement provides concepts that can only qualify to be dependable by supportive discussions that follow. A thesis provides distinct philosophies on a particular subject matter that needs critical analysis.
There are several synonyms for the word thesis; however, they have other varying meanings. The most common synonyms used to describe the word are hypothesis, premise, supposition, contention, and theory. A premise is a proposition advanced to be proven or hypothesize while a thesis is a statement with consistent and dependable opinions. Conversely, a scholarly argument is a fact that it is meant to validate a proposition description that comparatively does not fit the word thesis, which is a statement authenticated by supportive opinions (Mabbett, 2016). The theory also widely differs from the term thesis since it is a conception or reflection with supportive data and references. Comparatively, a thesis depends on the logical discussion that requires supportive evidence, which is a differing element in a supposition. A supposition is an assumptive idea that is believed to be factual without any supportive evidence. Contention widely contrasts with the thesis as it is merely an opinion that presents a point for argument.
The term thesis developed from Greek word θέσις. A direct translation of the word means a proposition. From the available records, the word the thesis was first used in the 1570s. During this time, a thesis was meant to prove a logical, sensible, and existing formulation of a proposition. Aristotle helped in shaping the history of the development of the word. According to him, he found the word to be relevant in analysis varying philosophers’ viewpoints. The philosophers who were well respected in that era that education was immensely advancing found themselves presenting different ideologies that require thorough scrutiny and analysis. These ideologies and other several discourses that were confusing created a need to substantiate them so that only credible claims were to be considered reasonable among the scholars.
