The internet plays a significant role in the education sector today, which has seen the academic community undergoing profound transformation and assuming new dimensions steered by technology driven applications. The internet has become a vital tool that boosts students’ productivity and a priceless source of information. This has seen the government and other education organizations enhancing internet accessibility to students through provision of computer gadgets and internet connection in schools. This has made students to be heavy internet users in the recent years. According to Jones 2016, 86% of American student from grade school to high school are internet users compared to 64% of the general American populations. However, other studies suggest that too much access to the internet and other education technologies hampers student performances in classes, especially in younger students. Students accessing the internet have reported a decline reading and math scores as they use their networked devices for non-school activities. Therefore, when the internet is perfectly suited to the education tasks, it will help in transforming the present misapplication and mismanagement of internet in classrooms into rich, students focused, interactive knowledge environment, but the excessive and ineffective internet usage will adversely affected students’ academic performance, extracurricular integration, and class attendance.
Academic oriented utilization of the internet works well when it is confined to a specific use such as researches, assignments, classroom tasks and class presentations. The internet provides a resourceful platform with numerous academic information where student can collect information from all disciplines to add on the information from teachers’ and textbooks’ materials. Also, the internet has allowed students to communicate with their peers and educators sharing important academic information (Pinker, 2015). For example, educators tend to set online study rooms where students can chat among themselves discussing classwork contents from the comfort of their laptops.
