Attention Deficit Disorder in College Students
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) shows such characteristics as difficulties sustaining attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. ADHD is a chronic condition affecting millions of children. In many cases, ADHD continues into an individual's adulthood. As such, my interests in this problem emanate from the realization that many college students have ADHD, which subjects them to multiple unique challenges. For example, ADHD students may display specific social and academic demands; exhibit higher risks of anxiety, stress, and mood disorders; and experience diminished support. As an individual who has dealt with ADHD in life's entirety, my curiosity regarding the condition emanates from the need to understand how college students experience ADHD and how they overcome its challenges. In many cases, disorders are considered major determinants of academic outcomes. I am curious to understand if ADHD makes college students perform worse or if ADHD has no significant influence on college grades.
Another reason I am interested in ADHD is that, as a chronic illness, it is likely to get worse with age. The main question I ask myself is whether ADHD gets worse in college. If it gets worse, then I can assume that academic performance deteriorates. From a personal experience, having a hard time focusing means diminished attention in class, and academic performance declines.
